Worms are very sensitive to light and usually will squirm a lot and try and hide if you expose them. If you pick up a worm and it does not seem to be responding to the light then something is wrong. Place the worm on the surface and come back later. If it's still there then remove it from the wormery, it's either on it's last legs or is already dead and will be recycled by the first bird that sees it.
Healthy worms will wiggle when exposed to light...
