Egg Food

When finches are breeding, they need extra protein. Moulting Canaries need a similar boost; and one of the most popular ways of supplying this need is through egg food. This can be shop-bought, or you can prepare your own with the simple recipe below.

Egg food should be provided if your finches are nesting

  • 1 egg, with shell
  • 1 tbsp cooked brown rice
  • 1 tsp millet
  • 1 tbsp crushed budgie pellets OR milled, mixed seeds
  • 2 tbsp mixed chopped and grated fruit and veg

Boil the egg for 15 minutes. Remove the shell and grind it up. Finely chop the egg. Mix all the ingredients together and serve cold. The fruit isn’t essential, but some birds take more readily to the mix if it has that sweet kick. Never be tempted to add honey or other sweeteners, though; and don’t be tempted by recipes that suggest a boiled egg and a couple of digestive sweet biscuits can do the trick. No biscuits sold for human consumption are suitable for finches, due to their added sugar, salt and fat.

Egg food provides a protein boost when birds need it most - moulting, nesting, or in times of stress. You don’t need to feed it at other times, but it’s a good treat to have in your repertoire.

Can I mix egg food in with the Gouldian finches seeds. As they are seed addicts and wil not eat anything else. It is safe to mix through their seed.
